This is part of the "Library of Religious Biography," edited by Mark Noll, Nathan Hatch, and Allen Guelzo. Just in time for Easter is this marvelous biography of the "Sweet Singer" of Methodism and renewal of the 1700s. As author of the hymn "standards" Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, 0 for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, and hark the Her- ald Angels Sing, Charles Wesley is the quintessential hymn writer of the renewal movement of the church. Although his personal struggle with other parts of this movement, nothing can take away from the gift he gave the church. The book traces the life of this creative man from cradle to grave, using previously unpublished hymns, letters, and journals. An enjoyable read, you will also become informed about his often stormy relationship with his brother John.
